The Leasing and Licensing Section of DA-BFAR Caraga in coordination with the DA-BFAR’s Integrated Marine Environment Monitoring System (IMEMS) Project, is currently facilitating the installation of the vessel monitoring system (VMS) and electronic reporting system (ERS) for commercial Philippine-flagged fishing vessels in Caraga region.

This move is pursuant to DA-BFAR’s Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) 266 “to enhance monitoring of fishing operations, enhance law enforcement, gather data on fishing effort and catch, aid in seafood traceability, ensure safety for fishers, and implement the vessel monitoring requirements of fishing vessels.”

Regional director Omnia B. Olama joined the DA-BFAR installation team on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 in Placer, Surigao del Norte. As of this writing, the Regional Bureau has already facilitated the free installation of VMS and ERS devices for 54 of the 75 targeted commercial fishing vessels in the region.
