Sec. Dar Releases Ulang, Hybrid Tilapia Seeds in Butuan

On his 42nd day in the office as Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary, William D. Dar visited the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Masao Technology Outreach Station in Butuan City last September 17, 2019 to launch fishery projects.

In a simple ceremony, Secretary Dar, assisted by DA Regional Executive Director Abel James Monteagudo, BFAR Caraga Regional Director Visa Tan-Dimerin and National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC) Chief Dr. Westly R. Rosario, dispersed 10,000 giant freshwater prawn (ulang) in Masao River. The dispersal in selected river systems in Mindanao aims to provide additional livelihood, and to help eradicate river fluke (schistosomiasis).

“Sana marami po ang makinabang sa mga pinakawalan nating ulang, na hindi lamang pang-ulam, pero makakatulong pa sa kalikasan,” Dar said.

Moreover, the Secretary handed-over to individual fishers in the region 9,500 fingerlings of breeder quality Molobicus, a saline-tolerant tilapia, and 3,100 red tilapia, in order to increase production of tilapia in high saline brackish and fresh water ponds, respectively.

It was also during this trip that the DA Secretary turned over P40,300,258 of input assistance to livelihood projects of Fisheries Coastal Resources And Livelihood (FishCORAL), and Environment-friendly fishing gears and paraphernalia.

Distributed were gill nets, hook & line, fish and squid pots, squid jiggers, spear guns and spear fishing gadgets to fishers, and input assistance for projects such as fish ponds, fish cages, fry nurseries, bangus in HDPE cages, mangrove crab in pond, mangrove crab in mangrove areas, aquasilviculture and bottled sardines to fisherfolk association and cooperative in Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Island.

Also, DA-13 distributed eight (8) hauling trucks to cooperatives of Caraga.

“Ang mga makinarya na ibinigay, dapat natin i-maintain at sustain nang magagamit ninyo ng mas maraming taon,” the Secretary advised the fisherfolk.
