PFO ADS Baylo Elektro Project gains Volunteer Surenderees
Electrofishing is one of the main illegal fishing methods in the Municipality of Bunawan, Agusan del Sur. To address this issue, the DA-BFAR XIII Provincial Fisheries Office of Agusan del Sur initiated the Baylo Elektro Project. The goal is to persuade practicing fisherfolk to abandon this destructive fishing method in exchange for legal fishing paraphernalia.
Through this project, Punong Barangay Gregorio B. Maloloy-on Jr. and Fisheries Coordinator Mrs. Marlyn Sinalvez with PFO Alternate Chelow S. Pairat were able to convince Mr. Jovane Dela Cruz Naragdao, 48 years old, and a resident of P-1 Consuelo, Bunawan, to voluntarily surrender his one (1) unit electro fishing gadget with complete accessories at the Barangay Hall of Consuelo on Tuesday, May 4, 2021. Mr. Dela Cruz confided that he feared the heavy penalty of the law once caught and apprehended using the illegal fishing gear.
DA-BFAR XIII OIC Regional Director Dr. Nilo Selim Katada has expressed the irreversible damage to the reproductive system of surviving electrocuted fishes. If not mitigated, this will ultimately deplete the fish stocks in the lakes, rivers and streams.
Upon the request of the PFO, the surrendered electrofishing gear was turned over and received by PFO Bimbo C. Lagare. In exchange, Mr. Dela Cruz received one (1) set of nylon lines that can be used legally in his fishing activities.
