Desamparados National High School in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur offers a General Academic Strand (GAS) for undecided Senior High School (SHS) students, giving them several options to choose a career track. One of these tracks is Fisheries and this prompted the School Head, Mr. Raymond L. Maligro to partner with the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) XIII Provincial Fisheries Office of Agusan del Sur (PFO-ADS) to conduct series of lecture training on tilapia culture. Apart from that, Mr. Maligro is also preparing to develop a backyard fishpond that will serve as the school’s learning site for aquaculture.
With assistance from the local government unit, a training activity was conducted on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the said school located at Barangay Desamparados, Talacogon, Agusan del Sur.
Mr. Jaesam C. Cimagala and Ms. Roselyn R. Fabiosa of DA-BFAR XIII PFO-ADS served as resource speakers for the said training. The lecture training focused on seven (7) major topics: biology of tilapia, site selection, pond development and design, feeds and feeding, water management, pond care maintenance and management, and harvesting. The said topics were thoroughly discussed among the 15 participating (SHS) students.
After the lecture training, the PFO personnel together with the LGU representative validated and measured the proposed learning site. Seeing the potentials of the young would-be farmers or aquaculturists in the Province, the DA-BFAR XIII PFO-ADS committed to support the effort of the school and the program as a whole.
