#SeaweedDevelopmentProgram | At least 40 seaweed growers from the Cayab Kinayan Seaweed Farmers Association in Barobo, Surigao del Sur and Baugo Seaweeds Association in Lianga, Surigao del Sur received a total of 2,100 kilograms of laboratory-grown Kappaphycus alvarezii propagules (micropropagation) from the DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Caraga on Friday, April 29, 2022.
The seedstocks were first outplanted from the DA-BFAR Caraga seaweed nurseries for six (6) months before it is dispersed to the seaweed growers.
These seedlings are expected to provide higher daily growth rate and higher tolerance to diseases such as the ice-ice disease Initially, the regional bureau is eyeing on capacitating the fisherfolk-beneficiaries to become certified seaweed propagule producers to supply its growing demand in the province of Surigao del Sur.
This iniatitive is part of the regional bureau’s commitment to ensure sustainable seaweed industry in Caraga region.
