The Municipality of Talacogon, is strategically situated in the riverbanks of Agusan River where networks of tributaries, swamps and lakes are abundant sources of fish namely Haluan, Hito, Gourami, etc. However, some local fishermen have been using an illegal type of fishing method called “kuryente” or electrofishing. They prefer to use this device as it can catch fish instantly and easily.
Knowing the negative impact of this practice to fish biodiversity and its ecosystem, Honorable Mayor Pauline R. Masendo of LGU Talacogon initiated a joint law enforcement measure participated by different government agencies. The goal is to eliminate mainly the electrofishing method and other illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices in their area.
With this initiative, OIC Regional Director Dr. Nilo Selim Katada dispatched Fisheries Protection and Law Enforcement Group (FPLEG) personnel - Mr. Raymond Piloton and Mr. Johnrey Elifani, and Mr. Chelow Pairat of PFO ADS to assist in the information dissemination and law enforcement activities. The DA-BFAR Caraga enforcers joined the composite team consisting of two (2) representatives from the local PNP, the Chairman of Bantay Danao - Mr. Richard Amado and the Fisheries Coordinator - Mrs. Rosulita Pereyra.
On April 27-29, 2021, the team conducted information drive to numerous fisherfolk in riverine barangays and they were able to dialogue with barangay officials on the possibility of actual patrol, monitoring and surveillance in their area of jurisdiction.
