The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) joined the Provincial Government of Dinagat Islands in celebrating its 19th founding anniversary, highlighted by the opening of the Agri-Fishery and Tourism Trade Fair 2025 on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Recreation Center, Capitol Ground, San Jose, Dinagat Islands.
DA-BFAR national director Elizer S. Salilig graced the occasion as guest speaker. In his message, Salilig reaffirmed the Bureau’s strong commitment to the province’s fisheries development, particularly in aquaculture and marine resource management. The national director also announced the forthcoming turnover of a 62-footer fiberglass reinforced plastic boat in 2026 to boost the province’s fisheries operations and livelihood opportunities.
The DA-BFAR chief also underscored the importance of adaptability among public servants in addressing challenges, citing the country’s 28 percent poverty incidence in the farming and fishing sectors. He stressed that reducing poverty among farmers and fisherfolk remains a key government priority, while also urging local fishing communities to support the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan program for sustainable resource management.
The event also brought together officials from various national line agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, Philippine Coconut Authority, National Irrigation Administration, Agricultural Training Institute, Philippine Rice Research Institute, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Trade and Industry, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Cooperative Development Authority, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Department of Labor and Employment. These agencies signed a wall of commitment in support of agriculture and fishery development in the province.
The agri-fishery trade fair provides a platform for the local farming and fishing communities, as well as producers, to inform and engage the general public about their industries, products, and services, while also showcasing the province’s commodity champions.
Following the ceremonial opening, Director Salilig, together with DA-BFAR Caraga regional director Omnia B. Olama and provincial fishery officer Bernard Z. Baclayo, met with governor Nilo P. Demerey Jr., provincial officials, and local chief executives to discuss development priorities and strengthen fisheries collaboration in Dinagat Islands.
