In line with the Regional Bureau’s commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the fisheries sector, the DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Caraga, through its Gender and Development (GAD) Office recently hosted the Regional Consultation on Gender Issues in Fisheries Sector, held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the DA-BFAR Masao Aquaculture Center, Butuan City.

Oliver O. Salino, training specialist II and a certified member of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) National GAD Resource Pool (NGRP), served as the resource speaker and led the series of interactive learning sessions on the review of legal imperatives on gender and development, HERstory and development of women’s human rights, and basic gender concepts and principles.

Salino, alongside members of the DA-BFAR Caraga GAD Focal Point System, also facilitated focus group discussions to identify pressing gender issues and gaps within the aquaculture, post-harvest, and capture fisheries sectors.

Fisherfolk leaders from across the region convened for the activity, creating a platform for open dialogue on gender-related concerns, the exchange of best practices, and the formulation of actionable recommendations for more gender-responsive fisheries programs in Caraga.
