The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) in Caraga Region, in partnership with the local government of Barobo, formally handed over a 62-footer fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) handline fishing boat and gear accessories to the Wakat Barobo Commercial Fishing Association (WABACOFA) on Monday, December 2, 2024.

BFAR regional director Omnia B. Olama led the ceremonial turn-over of the P9-million upgraded fishing vessel to the WABACOFA in a bid to develop the capacities of the fishing communities in optimizing production from capture fisheries particularly in tuna-rich fishing grounds in the region.

In his welcome address, municipal agriculturist Johnny B. Ramos highlighted the collaboration among various government sectors as a crucial factor in advancing fisherfolk welfare.

“This convergence of provincial and national government efforts reflects our unwavering commitment to our farmers and fisherfolk,” said Ramos.

Barobo municipal mayor Joey Pama shared his optimism, expressing that the project could lead to better opportunities for Barobohanon fishers. He also called for collective efforts in combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

“These interventions from DA-BFAR will not only boost your income but also uplift your quality of life. Let us take care of the FRP boats and use them responsibly,” Mayor Pama added.

RD Olama encouraged the WABACOFA to maximize the boat’s usage, maintain regular production reporting, and play an active role in marine resource conservation. She also urged the association to explore transitioning into a cooperative to enhance livelihood opportunities.

Key officials attending the event included provincial fishery officer Julius Sabino of PFO Surigao del Sur, provincial department head Beatriz M. Canonigo of the Provincial Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Office (PFARO), provincial board member Raul Kidlat Salazar, and SB committee chair on agri-fishery Narciso Moresca, among others.

The turnover ceremony was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between DA-BFAR, the local government unit, and WABACOFA.

Under the MOA, the project is expected to contribute approximately 40 metric tonnes of annual fish production, boosting the country’s fish supply and improving the socio-economic conditions of coastal fishing communities.
