In a vibrant display of culture and heritage, the DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Caraga marked the celebration of its 77th founding anniversary in a ceremony held on Monday, July 01, 2024 at the Regional Fisherfolk Training Center in Butuan City.

This year’s theme, “Boost. Fulfill. Achieve. Rise,” highlights the DA-BFAR’s commitment to sustainably (B)oosting fisheries production, (F)ulfilling its mandates with integrity, professionalism, and utmost dedication, (A)chieving milestones, and (R)ising above challenges together.

Highlight of the celebration was the ceremonial awarding of the cash prize for the local government of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur as the National Winner of the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) 2022 Search for Outstanding Coastal Community.

Regional director Omnia B. Olama formally handed over the P32-million cash award (in cheque) to LGU Bayabas represented by municipal mayor Apolonio B. Lozada, municipal agriculturist Geralyn B. Guibao, municipal tourism officer Jude Limbaro, and municipal treasurer Menchie Plaza.

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere were performances that highlighted the diverse cultural heritage of the Philippines. Traditional folk dances were performed by the BFAR talents, bringing to life the rhythmic and vibrant movements that have been passed down through generations.

The event also featured and served as an opportunity to recognize and honor the hard work and dedication of the select BFAR employees particularly those who have recorded the “longest years” in government service. The following personnel were recognized for dedicating more than half of their lives in the public service: Edgardo T. Bangahon (32 years), Paquito L. Labayan (32 years), Rustico L. Ranoco (34 years), and Edgardo P. Balambao (35 years).

Awards and commendations were also presented to individuals and teams who have made significant contributions and pride to the Regional Bureau. Their efforts were celebrated by giving tokens of appreciation, underscoring the importance of their roles in the organization’s success and in alignment with the theme of achieving and rising.

The event was more than just a celebration; it was a reflection of the pride and respect that the BFAR holds for the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage, combined with a vision for the #FutureOfFisheries.

As BFAR continues its mission to protect and sustain the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources, this celebration served as a reminder of the journey within which the agency is continuously heading on and sailing through – to boost, fulfill, achieve, and rise all for our beloved, the Philippines.# (Andy T.
