Fifty fisherfolk beneficiaries in Surigao City formally received their fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) boats, in time for the celebration of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s month.

Regional director Omnia B. Olama, together with Surigao city mayor Hon. Pablo Yves Dumlao II, city vice mayor Hon. Atty. Alfonso S. Casura, and city councilor committee on agriculture and fisheries Joy Yuipco, led the distribution of the 30-footer FRP boats with complete accessories on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at Punta Bilar, Surigao City.

“As we celebrate the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude for your invaluable contribution to our society and our economy. Your hard work and dedication in providing us with food and sustenance is truly commendable. You are truly an inspiration to all of us,” RD Olama said.

“And as our symbol of appreciation for your contribution in nation building, we are delighted to formally turn-over these 50 units of FRP boats, hoping that this project will provide you with comfort and durable fishing boats as you sail on our seas,” the regional director added.

RD Olama also urged the fisherfolk beneficiaries to support the government in its fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities. The good regional director also assured the fisherfolk that the government will continue to work harmoniously for the benefit of the farmers and fisherfolks.

City mayor Dumlao and vice mayor Casura thanked the DA-BFAR for the livelihood initiative and reaffirmed RD Olama’s plea for responsible usage of the FRP boats. 

Additionally, the Regional Bureau, through its Provincial Fisheries Office in Dinagat Islands, also awarded 14 units of FRP boats to fisherfolk beneficiaries in Loreto, Dinagat Islands.
