The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Caraga region marked the celebration of the Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Month with the official installation of its 2023 Regional Fisherfolk Director Rey Salvador Convocar, in an opening ceremony held on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.

Anchored on the theme “Masaganang Agrikultura, Maunlad na Ekonomiya,” this year’s celebration underscores the importance of agriculture as a key driver of economic development. It also marked the beginning of the new slogan of the DA under the administration of His Excellency, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr.

“This month-long celebration of our farmers and fisherfolks is a reminder of the significant role they play in our nation’s economy and food security.

Let us continue to support and honor them by recognizing their contributions, providing them with the necessary resources and assistance, and advocating for sustainable fisheries management,” RD Olama said.

During the ceremonial installation, training division chief Anna Melissa M. Talavera, the regional FARMC coordinator, turned-over the key of responsibility to the newly selected 2023 Regional Fisherfolk Director, while RD Olama handed-over the wooden boat which symbolizes the relentless effort of BFAR towards sailing for sustainable fisheries management and empowering fisherfolk communities.

RFD Convocar is the current chairperson of the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council & the Municipal Agriculture and Fishery Council in Sta. Josefa, Agusan del Sur and also serves as the provincial fisherfolk representative of the said province.

As mandated by DA Special Order No. 88, RFD Convocar will sit as the Regional Fisherfolk Director for the whole month of May, as part of the government’s strategy to further dramatize and popularize the fisherfolk empowerment and participation as government partners.

Also present during the ceremony were supervising aquaculturist Antonio Perral of the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte, Surigao City councilor committee on agriculture and fisheries Hon. Joseph Joey Yuipco, together with BFAR key personnel and staff, former regional fisherfolk directors and some fisherfolk leaders from the province. (Andy T.
