In an effort to promote inclusivity and equality in the fisheries sector, the DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Caraga Region through its Gender and Development (GAD) Program conducted a 1-day Gender Sensitivity Training (GST) for the newly hired women and men personnel of DA-BFAR Caraga, held on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the Regional Fisherfolk Training Center, Masao, Butuan City.

Finance and Admin Chief Elvera B. Sayas, who represented Regional Director Omnia B. Olama, recognized that the fisheries sector is not exempted from gender-based discrimination and inequality, and that these issues can hinder the sector’s growth and development.

“With this training program, we hope to enable you to create a more gender-sensitive and an inclusive environment in the fisheries sector, where women and men can have an equal access to resources and opportunities, and where their contributions are recognized and valued,” Sayas added.

Population Program Officer III Rosalito Libres, a GAD-certified technical adviser from the City Government of Butuan, served as the official resource speaker and facilitated the series of interactive learning sessions on the basic gender concepts and principles, the use of gender-fair language, anti-sexual harassment in the workplace, understanding sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE), and gender mainstreaming as a strategy to implement the Magna Carta of Women (MCW).

Human Resource Management Section Head Joey-c J. Danao, the newly designated BFAR regional GAD focal, said that the GST was designed to promote a gender-aware and gender-responsive workplace environment, and to empower DA-BFAR employees to become more gender-sensitive individuals.

The GST was conducted in line with the 2023 National Women’s Month celebration, with the theme: WE for gender equality and inclusive society. (Andy T. Ordoña, Information Officer, DA-BFAR Caraga RFIU)
