NASIPIT, Agusan del Norte – A multi-species marine hatchery will soon rise in this town that will satisfy local demand for aquaculture seed stocks, not only for the residents but also for neighboring towns in Agusan del Norte.

The Local Government of Nasipit, together with the DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Caraga formally held its groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the 25.6-million Multi-species Marine Hatchery in Brgy. Ata-atahon, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

In his message, Regional Director Dr. Nilo Selim Katada said that the implementation and construction of the multi-species marine hatchery intends to increase the production of the aquaculture sector, and lessen reliance on imported fry. It also seeks to encourage species diversification, broaden the range of cultivable species, and provide venue for fisheries extension activities.

Chief Aquaculturist Rizalinda L. Abing, the regional focal for legislated hatchery project, said that the facility once operational, is expected to produce 25 million bangus fry, annually.

Nasipit Mayor Hon. Roscoe Democrito B. Plaza thanked the DA-BFAR and the provincial and congressional offices for this promising development which will not only support their mariculture activities, but will also ensure local fry supply in the province and in the region, in general.

The ceremonial groundbreaking was spearheaded by Municipal Mayor Roscoe Democrito B. Plaza, Representative of the Congressional Office Orencio Corvera, Committee Chairperson on Agriculture SB Archie Tamayo, Municipal Agriculturist Lydia Apatan and Ata-atahon Brgy. Captain Wilfredo Pabatang, together with RD Nilo Selim Katada as well as the members of DA-BFAR Caraga Regional Construction Management Group.

The establishment of the legislated hatchery is pursuant to Republic Act 10858 “Establishing a Multi-species Marine Hatchery in Barangay Ata-atahon, Municipality of Nasipit, Province of Agusan del Norte and appropriating funds thereof” authored by then District II Representative Hon. Erlpe John M. Amante.
